Their tiny home, named Omni, is an 8m x 2.5m x 4.3m masterpiece located in Victoria, Australia. The Omni is not just a dwelling; it’s a commitment to self-sufficiency and a smaller carbon footprint.

Tiny House Story | Rebekah’s Plant-Filled Tiny House!

Rebekah lives in a self-designed 8.5’ x 30’ tiny home which is built by Mini Mansions Tiny Home Builders based out of Missouri. The build began in June of 2020 and was completed in October of 2020. Finally, she steps inside the home on October 18th, 2020 in Florida. After that, she has been living in it full time since then.

Before going tiny, Rebekah grew up in a fairly large house with her parents in Florida, and although she is grateful for childhood. But she envisioned her adult life differently. She loved the idea of a small cozy space that she could take wherever she wants. Also, she didn’t feel the need to live in a traditional house and didn’t want to get caught up in the rent trap.

Going tiny wasn’t just about living more into freedom, but also more into independence. I wanted to own it, but I didn’t want to buy a traditional house. Tiny life has worked out wonderfully for me.

Meanwhile, she graduated with a master’s degree in social work in August of 2020 while designing a tiny home. Currently, she is nannying and loves what she does. She said that It brings her so much fulfillment. Further, her tiny house is based on an 8’ x 28’ trailer. And all the wood framing is reinforced with bolts and hurricane straps. The exterior features a vinyl board and batten siding and metal roofing.

Moreover, her home is NOAH certified (National Organization of Alternative Housing) and is equipped for full-time and long-term living. However, she faces some challenges in figuring out where to legally put the house and getting the trailer title transferred to her name.

An Advice From Rebekah

The advice I have for anyone interested in going tiny is to JUST DO IT! I was the girl that loved the idea of going tiny, but never thought I’d ever actually had my own tiny house. I thought it was just a fun fantasy- for years. Got my motivation through a personally traumatic experience that set a fire underneath my feet.

I was at the lowest point in my life, and it was then I knew I not only wanted this path but needed it. The whole process of going tiny was a healing and growing experience, and now that I’m on the other side, I wish I would have believed it was possible sooner.

Honestly, I jumped in headfirst, knowing I would have to figure it out along the way. I signed contracts and paid thousands before knowing where I would put my tiny house. I’m not usually that kind of person. I’m someone who has to plan out every step of the way before taking the first one, and I usually let fear of the unknown stop me from the beginning. Not this time.

Going tiny was such a growing process for me and who I am as a person. It has taught me so much.

My advice: don’t let fear or “what if’s” stop you. You can
and will figure it out!

Her Dream Comes True

She wanted to live in a small house on a lot of lands for a long time. In other words, It is her goal to begin advocating for political and legislative change towards tiny houses for herself and others.

Tiny homes produce a lower carbon footprint, need fewer building supplies, limit consumerism, and produce a more sustainable way of living. Laws need to change to give tiny dwellers more options of where to place their tiny homes.

Dion & Ben Go from Van-Life To a Traditional Wood Cabin Style Tiny House!

Dion Cowe (24) and her boyfriend Ben Sawyer (30) living in their wood cabin-style tiny house in South Wales, UK. Before going tiny, they have lived a rather nomadic lifestyle on and off for the past 6 years. And, spending most of their relationship living in different vans in the Southern Hemisphere. Both of them try to live a sustainable lifestyle, and tiny living ties into that ideology perfectly. At that time, having a small footprint with only the bare necessities sounded just dreamy to them. “We often wondered how to achieve the goal of being financially free and able to travel, as well as having a solid base to fall back on when life threw us curve balls – which it has the habit of doing haha!” said Dion. Currently, they feel that tiny house has benefited their lives in more ways than they ever imagined.

It is a traditional wood cabin-style tiny house with waney edge larch on the exterior, complemented by red cedar shingles. Their tiny home measures 28ft x 8ft and features a mezzanine floor and a much-loved OmniTub soaking tub. Above all, It helps them greatly with working towards financial freedom, pushes their outgoings to a minimum. Also, it takes the pressure off having to work silly hours. Meanwhile, Dion & Ben get to spend so much more time with one another and their much-loved pets – which is so important to them. That is to say, Ben works for Dion’s dad as a carpenter and has been for the past two years, so the couple had some experience going into the build. “Dion’s dad helped a great deal and we couldn’t have achieved it without him,” said Ben.

Before going tiny

Before starting the build, they did briefly rent a two-bedroom house, and that short-term rent pushed them to design a small space of their own. Further, Dion & Ben felt that the money they were spending on rent could be put towards something way more beneficial. As the couple was in full lockdown from March, they used the time wisely and got to work, it took almost 6 months from start to finish. In the meantime, they lived in their converted VW T4 whilst working on the house. “The van was honestly a lifesaver, it sure was home for them six long months,” said Dion.

About some challenges

However, there were many challenges along the way. One of them is, learning to put the plans into SketchUp. Researching and finding out all of the important regulations and laws around tiny homes in the UK was another challenge they faced.

“Truth being told, the whole build was a challenge, even though we had great knowledge and trade experience behind us, none of us had actually built a tiny home on a trailer before, so as you can imagine it was a humongous learning curve,”

For Dion & Ben, nothing is forever. The couple always has a plan in motion. They would love to travel some more and maybe one day move to New Zealand. But, living tiny is more than ideal for them at the moment. They said, “Unfortunately, we are yet to experience having more time to travel and explore, thanks to Covid restrictions but I’m sure we will be out doing our thing again, as soon as it is safe to do so”. Also, they have a plan to rent out the home as an Airbnb in the future. Finally, they said, “All in all, living tiny is just fantastic and for anyone thinking about doing it, take the plunge you won’t regret it!”. A Married Couple Built Their Tiny House After Experiencing a Tiny Lifestyle in Virtual Reality!

The married couple Kate & Willem Van den Bergh have been living in a tiny house for 4 years. Now they have their 2-year-old son in the house too! Their trailer-based tiny house measures 7.6m in length x 2.4m in width and 4.25m in height. Stepping inside, the house has bright Cedar interior walls and a ceiling. It also features macrocarpa flooring and benchtops. However, their tiny house journey begins when they got married about 8 years ago.

Kate & Willem tried to figure out how they could possibly get out of renting and into their own home. In other words, paying rent and trying to save for a family home was just about impossible. So they started looking into alternatives like container homes. Meanwhile, they were inspired to build a tiny home while Kate was working as a designer for a sustainability magazine called Green Ideas, she was working on a feature about a couple who had built a tiny house for 27k.

I think as our son gets older he needs more space so that has been tricky, especially in winter because we don’t have covered outdoor space. But he has just started going to daycare full time, so he has a lot of fun there with all of the toys and space to run around.

At that moment they were attracted to the tiny house lifestyle. As an architectural designer, Willem designed their tiny house and put the house plans into Virtual Reality. As a result, they actually stand in their tiny house and look around using the VR headset which was really handy to get a feel for the space! “We played around with so many different layout ideas! We masking taped the floor of our flat to mark out the space we had to live within in the tiny house,” said Kate.

Once they had a design they were happy with, Kate & Willem moved into her mum’s house and started the tiny house build. “We visited a lot of different tiny homes. And, watched countless YouTube tours trying to get the perfect layout for our home,” said Kate. It was built by their builder friend in his warehouse in Waimauku. The build took almost 3 months and costs around $97,000 to complete. After that, the tiny house was towed from Waimauku to Half Moon Bay and then onto the car ferry and onto their awaiting section in Waiheke Island, New Zealand. It was finally maneuvered into place by a tractor!

Visit as many other tiny homes as you can to get a good feel for the space. Stay the night in them if you can. Living in a tiny home does take sacrifice and it isn’t for everyone! And, invest money into a good quality trailer as this is your homes foundation!

Currently, they are building their larger home at the top of the section. It is a 95sqm 2.5 bedroom home split over two levels with lots of smart storage solutions that they have learned from living in a tiny house. The tiny house will stay on their section and will be a place that people can come and stay. During, their new house will be complete by mid-March 2021. Jori Wilkinson’s Tiny FarmHouse Shed Is Ready For The Christmas Celebration!

Jori Wilkinson living with her husband and son in a tiny farmhouse shed in Washington state. Jori was drawn to the idea of debt-free living. To her, the tiny house seemed like the easiest way to do that. Jori always wanted to start their own business and she knows that it requires a significant amount of money. Therefore, they decided to live tiny until they afford to pay cash for a little bit bigger house someday in the future.

So they bought the 14’x40’ shell from a shed dealer and decided to finish the interior themselves. Luckily, both of them are really handy so they didn’t end up needing any help with the project. Likewise, Jori and her husband did all the work themselves from the plumbing to the finishing touches. However, from start to finish it took about 6 months to finish and costs about $30,000 including the shell.

If you are planning on living on a farm or with children I would recommend a mudroom.

But if they hired someone to do everything out it would probably have been double the cost. Further, they have been living in this tiny house for 4 years now. Currently, Jori’s tiny house is located on her parent’s 33 acres in Washington state. They have a plan on moving it onto their own land once their business is on steady ground.

However, the most challenging part of their house has been keeping it clean. Their small space gets dirty really fast because it is a farm with chicken and goats. Moreover, they just built a greenhouse off the side which will be a vegetable garden and also acts as a great hang out spot in winter. One of their businesses is in the beginning stages of is an Airbnb rental.

They are currently renovating it and will be available to rent this coming summer near Mt. Rainier in Washington state. Surprisingly, it’s located on 10 acres and has a private waterfall! Tiny House Of a Professional West Coast Swing Dancer!

Molly King has grown up in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. In her childhood, she fell in love with ‘The Boxcar Children’ books and building forts in the woods, and seeking out small nooks and corners to curl up in. Consequently, she always loved the concept of running away and living in a “found space”. However, Molly is a professional West Coast Swing dancer and a published author who always wanted to follow her passion for writing and living life on her own terms.

Meanwhile, in 2016 Molly seriously started researching about tiny lifestyle and she was confused about choosing whether that was in a tiny home, RV, or van. She learned as much as she could over the course of 8 months and ended up realizing she doesn’t want a mobile living structure. Because Molly still wanted to be in cold environments and she hates dealing with winterizing exterior pipes, wastewater, and electrical. So she postponed the idea and start living in a house in Breckenridge, Colorado for a year and a half. But the idea of tiny living was always still percolating.

“Start paring down your physical items if you can. Tiny living is great in that it has very clear boundaries of how much “stuff” you can have with you. So the more you can get used to living with less, the easier the transition will be.”

Professional Dancer In a Tiny House!

In 2018, Molly had to move to Salt Lake City, UT because she joined a dance partnership program. And of course, she realized that its the perfect time to go tiny. Within 3 months, she finds a perfect tiny home to rent. And, as of February 1, 2019, Molly has been in it for almost 2 years now. However, It’s technically a drivable tiny home measures 24.5 feet by 7.5 feet. It also has two loft spaces and a beautiful pinewood interior. In addition, it was built-in Colorado by Tumbleweed Houses and drive to Utah. Molly is not sure about how long it took to build. And she believes that it cost about $80K to build.

According to Molly, the most challenging part of her tiny house so far is to navigate the ladder either in the middle of the night or when she is sick. “I’ve also found it a beautiful experience to apply that same reasoning to my mental space. Living tiny has forced me to face myself and my shadows a bit more. And it’s been a very insightful and powerful experience to be more mindful of what I bring into my thought space as well, and weed out anything I don’t want to keep in there,” said Molly.

“I’d say that the tasks of keeping up with the propane in the winter for heat, and cleaning the toilet about once a month are the main chores. Not awful by any means though.”

After working in many professions, Molly decided to go with her passion for writing and working for herself. She just finished the recording of an audiobook version of her first book. A Brit/Aussie Empty Nesters Begins The Second Half Of Their Life In a Self-built Tiny House

A Gold coast, Australia based empty nesters Jan & Kev decided to go tiny once their last child left the house in 2006. Moreover, they want to spend the rest of their life in a less-complicated way with some financial freedom. Their spacious tiny house designed to be completely off the grid. Surprisingly, they have decided to construct the house on their own without any building skills and experience.

However, with a little help from the friends and their eldest daughter they have complete the build. The construction process takes 7 months to complete and costs almost $60,000 AD. Meanwhile, you may have heard their story before. Because their eldest daughter Lauren has already introduced them to the famous youtube channel called ‘Living Big In a Tiny House’.

Can honestly say nothing has been challenging about our tiny house, it’s brought more to our lives than we could have imagined!

Their tiny house located in Gold Coast, Queensland with some billion-dollar views around. And they have been living in this house for 2 & half years. Above all, this tiny dwelling is based on a 10m x 3m off-grid trailer. It also features a steel frame with color bond, fibro cement clad, solar panels, and a 5000L rain-water tank.

Jan & Kev have expanded their lounge area by adding the Eco board deck in front of the house. That is to say, they are having some additional outdoor living space when the family getting together. With the solar panels and water tank, the house is completely off-grid and doesn’t require any connection services. “Get a bigger water tank if you live in a low rainfall region,” said Jan.

The couple always wanted to do something they really love. So they start their own business by turning a vintage retro caravan into a juice and smoothie bar. Jan & Kev work together at the weekends while enjoying the astonishing lifestyle on the weekdays with two adorable dogs! Christina And Jon Loved The Idea of Living Minimally in a DIY Tiny House!

Christina and her boyfriend Jon living in a DIY tiny house with their dog named ‘Sammy’ and a bird (quaker parrot) named ‘Peter’! Before this happens, Jon was in law school and they wanted an option other than renting an apartment to save money and live more freely and affordably. Consequently, after watching a ton of Tiny House tour videos on youtube and seeing Tiny Houses on Pinterest they were drawn towards a minimalist lifestyle.

However, they have decided to build the house on their own since Jon and his dad had experience in the construction field. Also, they wanted to cut down the labor costs, and build something they truly wanted! After that, the family has started the build in August of 2018 and moved in around March of 2019, so they’ve been living tiny for a year and a half now.

I would say a big way to see if you can live in a tiny house is to rent an airbnb and stay in one for at least two or more days! That really helped us to see how much space we would want and allowed us to see what we liked/didn’t like in someone else’s design.

It is a 32×8.5x13ft tiny house that includes all of the things they really need, such as a couch with storage and a pull-out bed, a normal-sized fridge, a 50-inch tv, washer/dryer combo, and a bathtub. This tiny house features two loft areas such as a 10 ft bedroom loft with a queen-size bed. And, a 6 ft storage loft, with a bookshelf, craft supplies, and a bean bag chair.

DIY Tiny House In Florida

“The most challenging part about the tiny house is probably the fact that we both have different sleeping schedules, and since we’re kind of in one big room, lights and sounds are more likely to wake one of us up,” said Christina. So to help with this, They usually keep the place quiet when walking around and doing things if the other is sleeping. Currently, their house parked on Jon’s parent’s property in Central Florida where they have a spacious yard. In other words, there is lots of room for their dog, Sammy, to play outside and also for them to have a garden.

The walls of this tiny house are built using SIPs (structurally insulated panels). Its 3-inch thickness makes the living space wider and brighter. Above all, this 384sq.ft DIY tiny house also includes a desk for Jon that also can be used as a kitchen table. The total cost of the built (including furniture, appliances, and everything else they needed) was around 45,000$.

We would love to thank all of our friends and family for believing in our dream to build our own tiny house and for all of the support they have always given us!

Are you inspired by their story? Here is another thing Christina says, “Another piece of advice is to tape out a layout that you think you would want and see how it looks/feels. Go to tiny house festivals as well! Talk and meet other people who are living tiny, and watch as many videos as you can; do your research! One issue that seems to come up a lot is whether you want to be RV certified or not. And the difficulties finding a place to park”. 276sq/ft Cozy Tiny House of a Certified Yoga Teacher!

A Hilo, Hawaii-based Yoga teacher and a mindset coach Grace Riley lives in a 276 sq/ft cozy tiny house with her fiance Ryan and her dog Tofu. Her focus shifted to the side of tiny living when she was in college. Consequently, she learned how exactly our physical world influences the way that we live in college studies.

After traveling and living abroad for a year, Grace and Ryan decided to move forward with their tiny house dream. And start saving money to build their own house. However, after doing some research they have realized that they don’t have enough time and space to build one themselves. So they have decided to buy a tiny house and looked around for a home which meets their expectations.

Tiny house living has been such an adventure with both ups and downs, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Luckily, they have found the exact one from “Escape Traveler” for about $65k in total which included the cost of it getting delivered to them. There was a lot of wood, windows, and an open plan in that tiny house as Grace expected. They bought the house in early January 2019 and they had it delivered in April 2019. That is to say, they have been living here for 1 year and 6 months at the time of me writing this.

Unfortunately, their parking spot does not have water in the winter. So they customize the house and add an on-board tank to store water. “It can also be helpful to think about what space in your house that you will use the most. And make sure that those spaces are efficient for you,” said Grace.

As a tiny house dweller, she coaches people who are interested in minimalism, living a simple and intentional life, and possibly living in a tiny house one day really pare down and have a better relationship with the objects and items in their lives.
